A SERVICE UPDATE FROM HARRIS EDUCATIONAL LOAN Dear Harris Educational Loan Center User- Since 1911, The Field Museum has been providing educational resources to the students of Chicago through the Harris Educational Loan Center, thanks to the generosity of N.W. Harris. The exhibit cases and experience boxes, featuring real artifacts and specimens have educated, inspired and transformed hundreds of thousands of students over the last 100 years. As we look back over our first century of success, we also turn our eyes to the future of science education in Chicago and how the Harris Educational Loan Center can contribute to this future by continuing to educate and inspire Chicago area students. Therefore, the Harris Educational Loan Center will suspend all loans beginning January 1, 2011 with plans to re-open loan operations in Fall 2012. We will honor all reservations made for the Fall 2010 semester and kindly request all items be returned to the Harris Educational Loan Center on or before Saturday, December 18, 2010. All reservations for materials beyond Saturday, December 18, 2010 will be canceled. Active users that have paid the borrowing fee since July 1, 2010 may receive a full refund for the 2010/2011 school year, please email your name and mailing address to us by December 10, 2010 at harrisloan@fieldmuseum.org in order to receive your refund. We would like to take this moment to thank you for your continued support of the Harris Educational Loan Center, your contributions to our recent utilization survey and your commitment to the program when it re-opens in Fall 2012. Sincerely, The Harris Educational Loan Center

Welcome!

Welcome to the Harris Educational Loan Program! Whether you are a long-time borrower of Harris materials or just now are becoming aware of the program, you will find the Harris Loan Program to be a valuable educational resource for your classroom or your home. The Harris Loan Program has been serving Chicago-area educators and families for over 85 years. Originally funded through an endowment from Norman Wait Harris in 1911, the Harris Educational Loan Program links The Field Museum with Chicago-area schools. Thousands of loans are made to classroom educators, informal educators and parents each year. Tens of thousands of children benefit from the program. We offer four types of educational media from which to choose.

Exhibit Cases: We have nearly 900 Exhibit Case dioramas (24" high, 22" wide , and 7" deep) that show plants and animals in natural settings. A pullout label on the side of each case has basic information.

Experience Boxes: We cover more than 70 different topics with these portable collections of artifacts, replicas, specimens, and many other resources to provide a broad variety of learning experiences. There are three content categories: culture, biology, and earth sciences.

Audiovisual Materials: Audiovisual materials include slide sets with printed scripts, videotapes, and film strips with audio cassette tapes.

Children's Books: More than 100 titles are available.
